Pick the right scale
Seed mixes can contain plants of very different heights. Choose a compact variety for the front of a border and a taller one only where it has room. Keep paths usable after plants reach their full size.
Plant for the local warm season
Zinnias can be grown from seed once outdoor conditions are suitable. Follow the packet for depth and spacing; thin seedlings instead of keeping every plant in a crowded patch. If buying starts, choose healthy plants and acclimatize them before planting.
Keep the display going
Harvest flowers or remove spent blooms as appropriate to the variety. Leave enough foliage for growth, keep air moving between plants, and water the root zone when needed. Photograph the border from the same place through the season to see which heights and colours you would repeat.
