Choose a reachable spot
A container near the kitchen makes checking and picking easier, provided it receives enough sun. Use drainage holes and a suitable container mix. A small supermarket pot crowded with seedlings will need more space as the plants grow.
Wait for warmth
Basil dislikes cold conditions. Acclimatize transplants gradually and follow local warm-season guidance. Check the mix before watering and avoid leaving a pot in standing water. Inspect new purchases before placing them beside existing plants.
Harvest without stripping the plant
Take modest cuts above a pair of leaves, leaving healthy foliage for continued growth. Pinch out developing flower tips when leaf production is your priority. Label the variety and use only correctly identified edible herbs; a photograph is not a food-safety identification method.
