Plan for the full height
Check the packet for mature height, branching habit, and support needs. Put tall plants where their eventual shade will not compromise nearby vegetables. Think about wind and access before sowing beside a narrow path.
Start in suitable conditions
Follow local timing and packet instructions for direct sowing or transplanting. Protect young plants from disturbance and thin to the recommended spacing. A large mature plant needs more soil volume than a small decorative pot can offer.
Choose the purpose of the flowers
Some varieties are grown for cutting, others for seed heads or wildlife interest. Pollen-free cutting varieties have different value for pollen-feeding visitors, so check the variety if pollinator support is the goal. Leave suitable seed heads where they are safe and practical, or remove spent plants during your seasonal reset.
