Decide where the vines will go
Choose between a compact bush type and a vining type before planting. A trellis saves ground area but still needs secure anchoring and a clear route for harvesting. Keep neighbouring plants out of the mature vine’s shade.
Plant into suitable warmth
Use your local planting recommendations and packet instructions. Cold soil and cold nights can stall a warm-season crop. Handle transplants gently, or direct sow when conditions suit the variety. Check soil moisture as vines develop.
Harvest while quality is good
Pick fruit at the variety’s intended size and inspect vines often enough to find hidden cucumbers. Use clean cutters if needed instead of tearing stems. Poor fruit set can have several causes, including weather and pollination; check the variety and flower development before choosing a treatment.
