Match the root to the soil
A shorter carrot may be a better match for a shallow growing space than a long variety. Remove stones and loosen the seedbed without working soil while it is wet. Avoid adding fresh manure immediately before planting roots.
Protect the germination window
Direct sow at the packet depth. Carrot seedlings can take time to emerge, so label the row and keep the surface from drying out or crusting. Use a gentle flow of water that does not displace the small seeds. Check moisture rather than flooding the bed.
Make room and test a root
Thin according to the variety instructions while seedlings are small. Check harvest readiness by lifting a sample root, not by judging leaf height. Record the sowing date and size you preferred; that observation is more useful next year than expecting every root to look identical.
